Horse shows require that you wear the proper apparel which is different to your everyday hacking
gear. One thing you will need is a good showing shirt, and, depending on your discipline, a good tie. If you are a
woman and compete in hunter/jumpers, you will wear a shirt with a choker collar or ratcatcher. However, the look is
different for men as well as for those competing in dressage shows.
In dressage, the apparel is quite different to that worn by show jumpers, including the show
shirt and tie or hunting stock, which is a type of cravat. You will want a white shirt that uses a stock for
competitions. The riding stock requires you to tie it in a specific way, so make sure you practice plenty of times
before you even get to the competition. The final look should be a sort of square that looks a bit fluffled up. You
will also need to have a nice, plain gold pin to go through the tie. Remember that if you are showing, eventing or
fox hunting, you will need to wear a stock.
Show Jumping Ties
In show jumping competitions, men typically wear a traditional white button down shirt with a
tie. The type of tie you decide to wear is a matter of personal preference. You can go with a nice solid tie, or
look for something with a pattern. Make sure you do not go with anything too bright, loud or overly flashy. You may
also want to buy at least one nice white tie for classics and the bigger jumping classes.
